2. Mustang Disassembly

    tools 003A complete Mustang restoration will require removal of every part, and keeping those parts stored and organized is important throughout the entire restoration process. A disassembled Mustang takes up twice as much space as an assembled one so you should consider how to prepare your workspace. You should also have a disassembly strategy, a few supplies and of course some tools.

  • Interior Disassembly

    The first section of the disassembly strategy begins with removing the interior from the mustang. The components that will be removed include the seats, carpet, soft trim, molding and panels etc. View the slide show at the bottom of the post to see it all unfold.

  • Removing the Brakes and Steering

    Random_02 001This eighth step of the disassembly strategy moves me to the brake system. I already have the master cylinder out of the mustang and now its time to remove the front and rear brakes from the mustang.

    Remove the rear brakes

    To remove any drum brakes you will need a couple of tools as pictured here. You could use some screw drivers and vise grips but its much easier with these tools.

  • Disassembly Strategy Wrapup

    Random_04 039The disassembly strategy concludes with a mostly disassembled Mustang unibody leaving only the minimum suspension required to roll it up onto a trailer for a trip to the body and paint shop.

    This wrap up stage is focused on making sure every rubber plug and grommet is removed from the unibody as well as removing any remaining clips and attaching hardware.
